The impact of the Single Market and Maastricht
on the Arts and Media in EC and non-EC States

Seminar, Venice (Italy), 26-28 February 1993

Organised by the Cini Foundation, CIRCLE, ISPE (Instituto di Studi per la Programmazione Economica) and Associazione per lŽEconomia della Cultura with the support of the Council of Europe and UNESCO. This seminar was the first chance to deal, on an extensive and interdisciplinary basis, with all the effects of the Single Market on culture and communication in EC and non-EC States. Representatives of the Council of Europe, the EC and of UNESCO have taken part in the debate, together with some 40 specialists from 15 different countries.

The removal of borders and free circulation within Europe will increase the scope of cultural development, provided that so great an opportunity is consistent both with the support of the rich pluralism of European cultures, and with the protection of the artistic heritage and of national and regional cultural industries. This is indeed what the Treaty of Maastricht hoped for and this debate looked at the need therefore for often divergent perspectives to be reconciled.

A final report from this round table was published in the form of a book, for more information click here.
